Tuscaloosa City Council approves code, zoning changes for recovery areas (al.com)

January 18, 2012 –The City Council voted unanimously to approve the establishment of mixed-use districts with a new set of codes and zoning rules for areas affected by the April 27 tornado.

The changes, which will allow for residential and commercial development in Rosedale, the intersection of 15th Street and McFarland Boulevard and Alberta, were guided by the Tuscaloosa Forward strategic rebuilding plan endorsed by the City Council in September.

Proposed mixed use districts and zoning regulations introduced to City Council

December 20, 2011 — The new mixed use districts and zoning regulations for the tornado recovery areas were formally introduced to the Tuscaloosa City Council on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011.

The City Council will hold a public hearing and consider the adoption of the proposed ordinance on Tuesday, January 17, 2011.

The Tuscaloosa Forward Strategic Rebuilding Plan will establish the community’s vision for the future of Tuscaloosa. It will ensure that city government, the private sector, and the public are all working together to achieve a common vision. The strategic rebuilding plan will consider all of the systems that make up our city (e.g. infrastructure, energy, transportation, natural resources, land use, and quality of life) and will identify policies, projects, and other investments that will move Tuscaloosa forward.


Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The City of Tuscaloosa will host four community meetings to gather citizen input regarding the detailed planning phase of the areas impacted by the April 27th storm. The community meetings will be held November 28th through December 1stfrom 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and will be structured as come-and-go events.

The initial development of the Tuscaloosa Forward Strategic Plan (Plan) established potential “Big Ideas,” guiding principles and key objectives for the overall recovery area. The next step in the planning process is the development of more detailed plans for the potential public infrastructure projects identified in the Plan.

After gathering input from the community, plans and plan alternatives will be developed for further public comment before being finalized and presented to the City Council.

City officials and consultant team professionals led by Almon Associates, Incorporated will be available to provide information and discuss public concerns at the meetings. Residents and business owners who have been heavily impacted by the April 27th storm in the four major areas are encouraged to attend their specific community meeting. Citizens unable to attend their specific meeting are welcome to attend a different meeting.

The community meetings will meet at the following locations:

  • Alberta Area
    • Monday, November 28th
    • Tuscaloosa Magnet School – 315 McFarland Boulevard East
  • McFarland Boulevard/15th Street Area
    • Tuesday, November 29th
    • Central High School – 905 15th Street
  • Rosedale/10th Avenue Area
    • Wednesday, November 30th
    • Central High School – 905 15th Street
  • Forest Lake Area
    • Thursday, December 1st
    • Forest Lake United Methodist Church – 1711 4th Avenue

Transportation will be provided for those that wish to attend the Alberta and Rosedale area meetings. Shuttle buses will begin running at 3:30 p.m. on November 28th from Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church located at 2015 5th Street East.  On November 30th, shuttles buses will begin running at 3:30 p.m. from Rosedale Courts located at 2808 10th Avenue.

November 16, 2011 – The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, in cooperation with the City of Tuscaloosa, will again host small group forums later this month for local storm-damaged business owners to meet with Planning Department personnel. The purpose of these forums is to go over the new draft of proposed zoning codes and address questions and concerns relative to them, fostering a healthy working relationship between the City and the business community.

A forum for business owners in the 15th Street area will be held on Monday, November 28 at 3:30pm. Alberta area business owners are invited to come to one on Tuesday, November 29 at 3pm. And a third meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 30 at 9:30am for those in other affected areas as well as for those who may have missed the other meetings. All meetings will be held at Chamber office, located at 2200 University Blvd in downtown Tuscaloosa, across from City Hall. Sessions will last approximately 90 minutes.
